Kirk Cousins Wants To Avoid Becoming 'Flash In The Pan'

Jan 28, 2016 7:02 PM

Kirk Cousins has no expectations for his next contract.

“I don’t have any expectations,” Cousins said at the Washington Auto Show Wednesday night. “I just go forward knowing my job was to play football the best I could and whatever I do on the field will speak for itself.

“I just play football and try to find completions and avoid sacks and protect the football and win games. Hopefully I can do that at a high level. We’ll let the rest take care of itself.”

Cousins emerged this season as a starter quality quarterback.

“It does remind you of great moments in the season and positive things,” he said. “The key is to keep that going and for it not to be a flash in the pan or be a one-day deal, but that it could last and be something people can expect to see around here for a long time.”

Jan 26, 2016 2:11 PM

Johnson caught 88 balls for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015.

Peyton Manning Hints At Retirement To Belichick

Jan 27, 2016 12:42 AM

Peyton Manning acknowledged to Bill Belichick that he may be retiring after the Super Bowl.

"Hey, listen, this might my last rodeo. So, it sure has been a pleasure," Manning said.

NFL Films' cameras captured audio of Manning's remarks to Belichick.

Belichick's comments weren't caught on camera and on Monday he said that what he shared with Manning on Sunday would remain private.

"Don't have anything to share," he told reporters Monday. "I shared it with Peyton."

The AFC Championship Game was the 20th time Manning has faced Belichick.

Manning is under contract for 2016, with a salary cap charge of $21.5 million, which is bigger than his cap figure last season when the Broncos asked Manning to take a cut.

Marshawn Lynch Leaning Towards Retiring

Jan 23, 2016 2:17 PM

Marshawn Lynch is leaning towards retiring from the NFL this offseason, according to Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider.

Lynch would owe the Seahawks $5 million in bonus money if he decided to retire, which makes it in his financial interest to force the team to cut him.

Jets Hope To Soon Reach Deal With Ryan Fitzpatrick

Jan 22, 2016 12:22 PM

The New York Jets expect to open negotiations with Ryan Fitzpatrick's agent "in the very near future," general manager Mike Maccagnan said Friday morning in an interview on WFAN radio.

"We have time, obviously, before free agency," Maccagnan said. "We really would like to get Ryan back in the fold. Todd [Bowles] has said that. Obviously, myself, everybody in the organization feels very strongly about this. It's a good situation for all of us. We just have to go through this process and, hopefully, we can come to an agreement that's fair and everybody is happy with it, and go forward from there.

"That's our goal this offseason. ... Hopefully, we'll be able to get something done here in the near future."

Fitzpatrick is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason.

Fitzpatrick helped the Jets to a 10-6 record, setting the franchise record with 31 touchdown passes, but he may have hurt his value with three interceptions in the final quarter of the season finale.

Before that game, which cost the Jets a playoff spot, he figured to command at least $10 million to $12 million per year, according to industry insiders. The key, of course, is the amount of guaranteed money.

Chip Kelly Noncommittal On Kaepernick, Gabbert

Jan 20, 2016 6:40 PM

Chip Kelly declined to reveal if he favors Colin Kaepernick or Blaine Gabbert when he was introduced to the media as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

"Obviously Kap is an extremely talented football player and you need a good quarterback to win," Kelly said. "But I was also impressed from the film I watched in terms of how Blaine played this year. Both of those players made this an attractive situation."

Kelly said league rules prevent him from discussing any football schematics with either Kaepernick or Gabbert until the offseason program begins April 4th.

Kaepernick's contract becomes guaranteed if he's on the roster on April 1st.

Kelly disputed reports that he was interested in trading a year ago for Kaepernick with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"I don't know where that report came from but we were very happy with Sam (Bradford) in Philadelphia," Kelly said. "In terms of Kap, he was very difficult for us to play against on this field two years ago. I haven't done a ton of tape study on how he played (last year). We're in that process right now."

Jan 19, 2016 12:39 PM

Bruce Irvin said he'd be open to accepting $3 million to $5 million less to re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks.

Irvin is a fourth-year linebacker out of West Virginia and recently turned 28.

Irvin previously said he expects to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, now coached by Dan Quinn, in the 2016 offseason.

Washington Prepared To Use Franchise Tag On Kirk Cousins

Jan 10, 2016 11:43 AM

Washington is prepared to apply the franchise tag to Kirk Cousins if they are unable to agree upon a long-term contract.

Cousins' one-year, guaranteed salary with the franchise tag would be approximately $20 million and a 20 percent raise for year two.

If Washington plans to use the tag, it needs to be prepared to do a long-term deal with the tag as the starting point.

Colin Kaepernick Undergoes Surgery On Thumb, Knee

Jan 7, 2016 10:16 AM

Colin Kaepernick underwent surgery on his right thumb and left knee.

Kaepernick was in Colorado for a check-up on his surgically repaired left shoulder.

It raises the question of whether Kaepernick will be healthy enough to pass a physical on April 1, when $11.9 million of his contract for the 2016 season becomes fully guaranteed.

"Once again, I'm preparing to be healthy and win the Super Bowl," Kaepernick said in the 49ers' locker room on Monday. "That's all my focus is."

Kaepernick said increased pain and swelling in the right thumb area made him decide to get an MRI last week, which revealed a torn ligament.

49ers' Next Coach Likely To Decide Colin Kaepernick's Future

Kaepernick is scheduled to earn $14.3 million in 2016 though the 49ers could cut him or try to trade him.

Blaine Gabbert is signed for 2016 at just $2.25 million and he expects to compete for the starting job.

Trent Baalke is not expected to use the 49ers' first round pick on either Jared Goff or Paxton Lynch.
